Bellingham School District Wade King (Yew Street) Road Elementary School

NES assisted the District in locating and evaluating potential building sites for the Wade King elementary school. Our services included field delineations, mitigation design, technical report preparation, and feasibility assessment. NES provided assistance with environmental permitting for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Washington State Department. of Ecology and Whatcom County. During project construction, NES also provided oversight to ensure proper protection of critical areas and installation of mitigation measures.

Carey Brothers Creekside Meadows

NES prepared a wetland impact assessment and mitigation plan for a 70-lot subdivision on 18 acres in Whatcom County. NES services obtained an Clean Water Act Section 404 Individual Permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, a Clean Water Act Section 401 Certification from the Washington State Department of Ecology and Hydraulic Project Approval (HPA) from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife and a local critical area permit from Whatcom County. The design included a 4+ acre wetland enhancement plan to be performed on and off-site.

City of Bellingham Shoreline Master Program Update

NES teamed with Middle Fork GIS to develop a comprehensive GIS database and technical analysis of existing conditions and evaluation of restoration and enhancement potential for the City’s Shoreline Master Program update. Project tasks included review and compilation of existing data, GIS data base construction and analysis report.

Community Food Co-Op Cordata Store

NES provided site planning and wetland services for the Community Food Co-Op’s second store on Cordata Parkway. Wetland services included an off-site mitigation property search, mitigation design, and agency coordination. In addition, NES provided guidance on environmental stewardship and worked with the Co-Op to find ways to build partnerships and provide public education.

Cottages at Landon Creek

NES prepared a wetland impact assessment and mitigation plan for a residential cottage development adjacent to Landon Creek in the City of Bellingham. Mitigation design included both on and off-site mitigation. NES helped obtained a Clean Water Act Section 404 Nationwide Permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Clean Water Act 401 and Coastal Zone Management authorization from the Washington State Department of Ecology, Hydraulic Project Approval (HPA) from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife and a local critical area permit from the City of Bellingham.

Lummi Nation Smokehouse Road Property Wetland Delineation

NES provided wetland services to the Lummi Housing Authority for a potential tribal housing project. Services included a wetland delineation and functional assessment. NES also worked with the tribe on assessing project feasibility and permitting implications related to Housing and Urban Development (HUD) funding and the Endangered Species Act (ESA).

Stromberg Buffer Mitigation and Monitoring

NES designed buffer mitigation for a single-family home along the shoreline of Lake Whatcom for compliance with the Whatcom County Critical Areas Ordinance and Shoreline Master Program. Work included a landscape planting composed of native plants and a "Rain Garden." The final installation is a beautiful landscape of native plantings along the lake shoreline.

Whittaker/Gardner Wetland and Stream Delineation

NES performed a wetland and stream assessment for a single-family residential parcel near Shuksan Golf Course. NES worked with the landowners to identify an appropriate building site for their passive solar house. The project also included incorporation of forestry land use and a Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP) stream enhancement project. Together, NES and the landowners developed a permitting strategy that was accepted by Whatcom County within weeks of submittal.
